Things To Do In Lozère – The Causse Méjean: A Limestone Plateau And A State Of Mind

The name “Méjean” is Occitan for median. 430 people and 20,000 sheep inhabit the 340-square-kilometre wilderness of steppe and forestland of the Causse Méjean. Located between the Tarn and Jonte Gorges, the Causse Noir and the Causse de Sauveterre, it is nicknamed the “Gorges roundabout” or the “Méjean island”. It ranges in elevation from 800 to 1,247 metres, its highest point being the Mont Gargo.

The Causse Méjean is more than just a limestone plateau, it’s a whole state of mind. Day-to-day life here is very much like that of islanders. The local people have developed an ecosocial system that keeps this “island” alive all year round.
